Public is getting its say on future of the barns
The City of Traverse City - Charter Township of Garfield Recreational Authority (Recreational Authority) engaged the community to help develop a vision for the future use of the Barns and the surrounding property at the Grand Traverse Commons.
This process was the next component of a plan approved by the voters of the City and Garfield Township in November 2004. Three parcel of property were purchased and preserved: the former Smith Barney property on West Grand Traverse Bay, Hickory Meadows, and the Barns property. The Smith Barney building has come down and the Hickory Meadows management plan has been approved and is being implemented.
The Recreational Authority was focusing its efforts on determining how best to use the Barns and surrounding property. An open citizen-based process was used to develop a broad-based consensus vision for the future of the Barns and the property.
The process included two primary venues for public input: a series of community visioning sessions where community members can come together and share their ideas, and input through web resources or by direct mail.
